Joerg Gasser, the Swiss government's former top diplomat for financial services, is the new head of the Swiss Bankers Association, an industry lobby.
The head of the Swiss Bankers Association, Claude-Alain Margelisch, is stepping down after more than 25 years with the industry lobby, the body said in a statement. He will be replaced by Joerg Gasser, who until February was the lead Swiss diplomat on all financial matters.
Gasser, a former Red Cross deputy delegation head in Pakistan in Iraq, is a skilled and experienced negotiator. He led several Swiss banking trips abroad and was a vocal advocate for Switzerland's attempt to forge financial technology as part of Switzerland's «crypto nation» efforts.
Knowing the Boss
Gasser takes on the job as fissures emerge between the lobby's biggest members – international heavyweights like UBS, Credit Suisse, Pictet, and Julius Baer – and the coterie of smaller banks which are largely domestically-focused, as finews.com reported last year.
The former diplomat knows his new boss, lobby Chairman Herbert Scheidt, very well from the government-led banking trips including to Asia and Saudi Arabia.
