«Prolonging the Agony: How The Anglo-American Establishment Deliberately Extended WWI by Three-and-a-Half Years» by Jim Macgregor and Gerry Doherty
What it is:
The World War I wasn't primarily Germany's fault, and peace negotiations were prolonged unnecessarily because of business, economic, and financial interests: the two Scottish authors illustrate in a carefully-researched book how a «secret elite» of Anglo-Saxon bankers and politicians purposely delayed ending the war – and benefited handsomely from it.
Why I recommend it:
«In war, truth is always the first victim: the justifications for the starting the third Gulf War, for example, were based on intentional lies, just as claims in the second campaign that surgically precise bombing would spare civilians were false. This book, which challenges the general interpretation of contemporary history, shows that «fake news» isn't an invention of our times. Its 900 pages are written in a lively style, providing a glimpse behind the political curtain. Even if I'm not in agreement with all the theses presented by Macgregor and Doherty, the book gives readers a new view of the causes and events in the first World War as well as the mechanics of (mis)information during and after the conflict.»
