DBS Chief Executive Piyush Gupta has spotted «four or five» internal candidates who have the potential to take on his job.

Without specifying a timeline, the Singapore bank chief told Euromoney magazine in an interview that he is trying to build a succession bench. However, he clarified that he has no plans to leave soon.

«I've got four or five candidates, all plus or minus 50 who, with the right grooming, have the potential to take my job some day,» said Gupta, who was quoted in Euromoney.

Being a Generalist

The magazine has named a few possible candidates, such as the head of institutional banking group Tan Su Shan, Singapore country head Shee Tse Koon, and freshly hired group head of strategy and planning Han Kwee Juan.

«I'm a big believer in having generalists. One of the reasons I'm a good banker is I know a little bit about everything...to me, getting someone who runs consumer and wealth and have her (Tan) run the corporate side of the business is helpful,» said Gupta.

World's Best Bank

DBS has been named the World's Best Bank by Euromoney magazine, a first for an Asian bank. Gupta, 59, was in London with his team last week to receive the award for the bank he helms.

Last year, Bank of America took the title of world's best bank whereas DBS took the title as the world's best digital bank. This was «principally because» of a metric that the bank used to show the different return on equity from a digital customer and that from a traditional one, the magazine said.
