ANZ Bank sacked a number of its bankers in the past few days and said that it took disciplinary action in connection with drug taking issues and sexual harassment.
ANZ was recently in the headlines over its involvement in a rate-rigging scandal. The bank agreed to settle a court case brought by the Australian financial regulator that alleged the institution rigged one of Australia's key interest rates.
Now the bank has made the news again for reasons other than providing professional financial services. ANZ sacked what it referred to as a «small» group of its bankers for taking illegal drugs at a work-related event.
Sex, Drugs and Alcohol
However the disciplinary actions did not end there as the Melbourne-based bank also said it recently let another staff member go for sexually harassing a woman from a rival bank at a separate outing, according to a report in the «Sydney Morning Herald».
The behavior was detailed in an internal email to employees from Kathryn van der Merwe, head of talent and culture at the bank. ANZ was dragged into another unseemly episode in January 2016, when two former employees sued the bank after they were dismissed for inappropriate behavior. In the suit the two claimed senior management of the bank condoned a culture of sex, drugs and alcohol.
