Asia's booming finance hubs top the latest survey of the most expensive locations for working abroad. Hong Kong sits in pole position followed by Tokyo, Singapore is ranked fourth with Seoul fifth, according to the survey published by global HR consultant Mercer.
Other cities who made the top ten include Luanda (6), Shanghai (7), N’Djamena (8), Beijing (9), and Bern (10). The world’s least expensive cities for expatriates are Tashkent (209), Tunis (208), and Bishkek (207).
Forget the Car
Punitive rental costs are the major factor in Hong Kong rising above other cities when it comes to the expatriate life. But it is not only housing that has ballooned, a single parking space in the city recently changed hands for $760,000.
Elsewhere in Asia, Bangkok (52) jumped fifteen places from last year. Kuala Lumpur (145) also rose in the ranking, up twenty places, while Hanoi (137) plummeted thirty-seven places.
Mercer's annual rankings rates prices on rental accommodation, meals, and entertainment among a measure of other daily essentials.
