Regulatory filings show that Goldman Sachs has confirmed its previous agreement to pay $3.9 billion to settle with Malaysia over the longstanding 1MDB scandal.
Goldman Sachs first reached an agreement in principle in late July after reportedly sending a six-strong team to Malaysia to renegotiate a previously rejected deal of $3 billion, $900 million less than the final deal.
«We are pleased to have reached an agreement in principle with the Government of Malaysia to resolve outstanding charges and claims against Goldman Sachs,» the bank said in the statement last month. «Today’s settlement is an important step towards putting the 1MDB matter behind us.»
The $3.5 billion settlement deal includes $1.4 billion in proceeds from 1MDB-linked assets and a $2.5 billion cash payout which, according to a «Bloomberg» report citing unnamed sources, must be paid to Malaysia within 10 days.
