The experienced banker had worked for UBS for almost 30 years before leaving the Swiss bank. Now he has landed a prestigious chief post in Asia.
Aberdeen Standard Investments (ASI) has appointed René Buehlmann as CEO of Aberdeen Standard Investments' Asia Pacific business effective early March 2021, according to a statement Monday. Buehlmann succeeds Hugh Young, who will take on a new role as chairman Asia.
Based in Singapore, Buehlmann will be a member of the executive leadership team and report directly to Stephen Bird, CEO of Standard Life Aberdeen.
More Than 30 Years of Experience
Buehlmann brings more than three decades of experience in global wealth and asset management, corporate banking, and financial markets, including 29 years at UBS. Until January 2020, he was head of asset management Asia Pacific and global head of wholesale client coverage, where he led regional operations in seven countries and managed the global wholesale business.
Buehlmann joins ASI at an exciting time, according to insiders, as the Asia Pacific business is competitively positioned to grow in some of the world's fastest-growing savings and investment markets. The former UBS executive will be responsible for driving the firm's global strategy in the region.
Advising Alongside
In his role as chairman Asia, Hugh Young, who built Aberdeen's entire business in Asia, will continue to champion ASI in the region. He will continue to provide strategic advice to Buehlmann and will retain his various roles as a board member in various fund management and investment companies.
