The crypto industry is off to a rocky start in Hong Kong, this time with a local platform revealing that it had suffered one of the largest thefts of all time.
The database of Hong Kong-based Mixin’s cloud service provider was «attacked by hackers, resulting in the loss of some asset», according to a social media post by the firm which estimated the total value at approximately $200 million.
Mixin said it had stopped allowing users to withdraw funds but transfers were not affected. Services will reopen after vulnerabilities are fixed while a solution will be announced later for «how to deal with the lost assets».
All-Time Hack
At $200 million, Mixin’s loss is the 10th largest crypto hack of all time by volume stolen, according to blockchain research firm Elliptic, and the top theft by far in 2023. 2022 was the worst year ever with $3.8 billion in crypto stolen, according to Chainalysis.
Mixin is a network for the transferal of digital assets with one million users, according to its website.
