Citi has hired a former investment banker from Malaysia’s CIMB to lead tech, media and telecoms for the ASEAN region, finews.asia has learned.

Citi hired Varun Matta as managing director and ASEAN head of technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) investment banking, according to a note seen by finews.asia, where he will also be tasked to cover some sponsor clients.

Matta will be based in Singapore and report to APAC co-heads of TMT Jim Perry and Ho-Yin Lee alongside David Biller, head of Asean banking, capital markets and advisory. 

Matta is an experienced investment banker joining most recently from CIMB in Singapore where he was a managing director. Previously, he also worked for Delta Partners and Credit Suisse.

ASEAN Focus

The bank will look to increase focus in the ASEAN region’s TMT sectors with a newly created role specifically focused on the market.

«Asean is home to some of the fastest-growing TMT companies globally and we are further intensifying our focus on this sector with this key hire to support our client-led growth across South East Asia,» said Jan Metzger, head of Asia Pacific banking, capital markets and advisory, in an email.

A spokesperson for the bank confirmed the contents of the note.
