A seven member gang was busted while attempting to smuggle nearly $300,000 worth of gold into India with various storage methods like eating the precious metal.
The attempt involved 5.5 kilograms of gold worth around $298,000 smuggled through a flight from Dubai to India’s Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport, where officials seized the assets. The smugglers are believed to be repeat offenders seeking to sell the gold in India's black market.
Amongst the stashing methods used were the consumption of capsules filled with gold processed into a paste-like substance, according to Dehli-based «NDTV».
Year-to-date, the top gold smuggling incident occurred in May when officials seized more than 100 kilograms of precious metals declared as brass metal in Mumbai.
